Course overview.
The day is grounded in evidence-based behavioural analysis — not the pseudoscientific body-language nonsense that dominates the bookshelf. We work the techniques that have empirical support (Ekman's microexpressions research applied cautiously, the well-documented patterns of dominance and submission in group settings, the behavioural cues of deception when they are reliable and when they aren't) and you practise them in structured exercises with peer feedback.
Who it's for.
Senior managers, executives, sales professionals, HR business partners, negotiators, M&A leads, and anyone whose effectiveness depends on reading rooms accurately. Particularly useful for technically excellent leaders who recognise that their interpersonal radar lags their domain expertise.
What you'll learn.
Situational awareness and the structured observation method
Cooper's colour code, baselining, anomaly detection — the structured observation techniques used by security professionals and intelligence officers, applied to boardrooms, negotiation tables and team meetings. Practical exercises in a controlled setting build the habit.
Group dynamics and the architecture of power
How to spot the real decision-maker (often not the most senior person present), the coalition lines in a room, the dominance and submission cues that intelligence officers read in a glance, and the difference between status and authority — and why it matters when you're trying to land a proposal.
Deception detection — and its limits
The empirical evidence on lie detection (it's worse than most courses claim), the few behavioural cues that do hold up to research, and — more importantly — the structured questioning techniques (cognitive-load methods, strategic use of evidence) that genuinely improve your detection rate. The honest version of a topic full of nonsense.
