Course overview.
The course is methodology-neutral but draws on the common foundations of PRINCE2, PMI/PMBOK and APM. By the end of day two you'll have worked through a sample project from initiation to closure, building the artefacts that a real project lifecycle requires: business case, project plan, risk register, communications plan, stage controls and lessons learned.
Who it's for.
Newly appointed project managers, accidental project managers (those handed a project as part of another role), team leads stepping into project responsibility, and anyone preparing for further qualification in PRINCE2, PMI or APM. Particularly useful for organisations standardising their project management practice.
What you'll learn.
Project initiation and the business case
What makes a project a project (and not just work), the business case structure, scoping techniques, stakeholder identification, and the initiation-stage artefacts that determine whether the rest of the project has a clean foundation or a wobbly one.
Planning, estimating and risk
Work breakdown structures, scheduling techniques (Gantt, dependency mapping, critical path), estimating methods (analogous, parametric, three-point) and risk management — identification, assessment, response, monitoring. The planning discipline that makes the rest of the project controllable.
Execution, control and closure
Stage gates, change control, earned-value reporting, issue management, communications cadence and the closure discipline — including lessons-learned capture that actually feeds back into the next project rather than sitting in a SharePoint folder.
