Project Governance Strategies
Project governance is the oversight architecture that determines whether a project's decisions get made cleanly and on time, or whether it dies a slow death by indecision. This one-day course covers the design of effective project governance — for both single projects and programmes — drawing on the empirical evidence on what governance models work in practice.
Course overview.
Built for senior project managers, sponsors and PMO leads, the day works through the governance design questions that come up in practice: steering committee composition, meeting cadence, decision rights and RACI clarity, escalation paths, the relationship between the project board and external assurance, and the executive-stakeholder management that determines whether governance helps or hinders.
Who it's for.
Senior project managers, programme managers, project sponsors, PMO directors and the executives who chair project boards. Particularly useful for organisations whose project governance has grown organically and now needs deliberate redesign, or for new programme leads inheriting governance structures they didn't design.
What you'll learn.
Governance architecture and decision rights
The fundamental governance design questions: who sits on the board, what decisions belong at which level, how RACI maps to governance forums, and the criteria for tiered escalation. The empirical evidence on board sizing, meeting cadence and the relationship between governance overhead and project performance.
The steering committee in practice
What the practitioner's playbook for running effective steering committees actually looks like — agenda design, pre-read discipline, decision papers, the use of consent agendas, and the chair's craft. Plus the unspoken governance — the relationships and conversations that happen outside the meeting and that determine its outcome.
Assurance, independent review and the executive stakeholder
The independent assurance functions that distinguish well-governed projects (gate reviews, IPA reviews, peer challenges), the relationship between the project board and external assurance, and the executive-stakeholder management discipline that keeps senior leadership engaged without micromanaging.
