Course overview.
Built around the APM and PMI risk frameworks but firmly applied — we work through real anonymised case studies from UK infrastructure, defence, public-sector transformation and construction. By the end of the day you'll have a working register, an analytical method that survives a steering committee challenge, and a response playbook you'll actually use on Monday.
Who it's for.
Project managers, programme managers, PMO leads, risk practitioners and project sponsors with accountability for delivery. Particularly useful for managers inheriting a troubled project where the risk register has become a bureaucratic exercise rather than a management one.
What you'll learn.
Structured risk identification
Pre-mortem analysis, assumption-and-constraint excavation, prompt lists and the SWIFT (Structured What-If) technique. The techniques that surface the risks your team is currently not talking about — and the ones that quietly destroy projects.
Qualitative and quantitative analysis
Probability-impact matrices done properly (most aren't), the math behind expected monetary value, Monte Carlo simulation for schedule and cost risk, and the technique selection criteria that match analytical depth to the decision actually being made.
Response planning and the live register
The five response strategies (avoid, transfer, mitigate, accept, exploit), risk owner accountabilities, contingency and management reserve calculation, and the weekly cadence that keeps a risk register a working management tool rather than a quarterly compliance artefact.
